Meet Akalia!
Some of you may recognize this beautiful girl, as she was posted for an urgent foster placement a couple weeks ago. She was pulled into FCR just days before euthanasia at a Quebec shelter, where she was deteriorating in a kennel environment, and her foster dad stepped up last minute without hesitation to give her a safe, structured home.
Akalia is a young, intelligent German Shepherd with all the classic GSD qualities… loyal, affectionate, protective in a healthy way, and full of playful, high energy.. Since her day of intake, with the help of rules, boundaries, consistency, and love, her full personality has bloomed. She is potty trained and doing well with crate training, and although she may howl briefly when left alone, she settles quickly as she learns more confidence.
With her short time in a new home she has had the time to develop hobbies, such as following foster dad around the house during house chores! She does wonderfully with loud sounds, even “helping” foster dad during construction time. Akalia lives with another dog and plays beautifully once properly introduced, but she does best with slow introductions to unfamiliar dogs and responds well to corrections when she gets excited or barks on walks. She has a high prey drive, so a home without cats is strongly recommended, and she is untested with children, so a kid-free home suits her best for now.
She loves chasing, tug-of-war, toys of all kinds, car rides, routines, and being close to her people - she is affectionate, loyal, and eager to please. Her ideal home is with an active single adult under 50 or an active couple without children, preferably as the only dog, where her intelligence and drive can be channeled and where she can continue to thrive with structure and love. For those who may recognize her from her emergency placement post, today she’s a beautiful example of what safety, patience, and proper guidance can do. Her foster truly saved her life, and now Akalia is ready for her happy ending, a devoted companion looking for someone just as committed as she is!
